Tips for Healthy Dining

A good diet is extremely important, especially for seniors. The numerous benefits of a healthy diet and proper nutrition include: increased mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, a more robust immune system, faster recuperation time, and better management of chronic health problems. Eating well can also be key to staying mentally sharp, emotionally balanced and energetic, with a strong immune system and a positive outlook.

In general, some important guidelines for seniors include:

Consuming more calcium and Vitamins C and D for bone health.

Vitamin C foods also help with iron absorption.

Eating dark green leafy vegetables and foods rich in Vitamin A to help prevent blindness and promote healthy skin.

Reducing sodium (salt) to help prevent water retention and high

blood pressure.

Reducing saturated fat intake in order to maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

  Eating more fiber-rich foods.

  Reducing consumption of sugar.

Becoming informed about and getting the recommended amount of important vitamins and minerals.

  Increasing water intake.

  Participating in regular physical activity.
